France and Germany hand their joint brigade over to NATO in Poland
The iconic Franco-German Brigade is officially shifting its focus toward the east, moving under the command of NATO’s Multinational Corps Northeast.
Remember that fancy Franco-German Brigade created back in the 80s to show off European unity? Well, they have a new assignment: keeping an eye on the eastern flank. They are now officially reporting to the NATO command in Szczecin, Poland.
This doesn't mean five thousand soldiers are packing up and moving to Poland tomorrow. It means the Bundeswehr and the French Army are now part of a bigger, more serious operational plan. They are officially gearing up for deterrence, which is fancy talk for being ready to jump into action if things go south on the border.
It is quite a shift for a unit that used to be mostly about diplomatic optics and joint parades. Now they are a functional tactical cog in the NATO machine, specifically tasked with holding the line in the rear.
History shows that when European militaries start reorganizing their command structures to focus on the east, the neighbors usually do not like it very much.
