European Parliament Wants Warships in the Black Sea to Guard Grain Ships

Original version ·

Russian drones keep buzzing NATO airspace and hitting civilian bulkers, so Brussels suddenly remembered they actually have navies.

After months of missiles and drones exploding uncomfortably close to Romania and Bulgaria, European lawmakers finally noticed that strong words don't stop cruise missiles.

The assembly overwhelmingly voted to consider deploying an actual EU naval operation in the Black Sea to shield merchant vessels and defend Ukrainian export corridors. The resolution also floats teaming up with NATO for a "Black Sea Guard" patrol and speeding up maritime defense hubs in Constanța and Varna.

Allowing Russian forces to bomb grain carriers right on the border of European waters was getting a bit too awkward even for Brussels bureaucracy.

Checking the Montreux Convention to see who gets to break the news to Turkey might be the real diplomatic thriller here.
