EU extends protection to 2028, but with a twist for draft-agers
The EU just agreed to keep the safety net for Ukrainians for another year, but they are finally drawing a line for those trying to dodge the draft.
Europe is extending temporary protection until March 2028. But the Council of the EU decided that new applicants must prove they have fulfilled their military obligations back in Ukraine.
How does one prove they are not a draft evader to an Irish or German bureaucrat? Simple: show a passport with a legal exit stamp or a proper exemption paper.
The Irish Minister Jim O'Callaghan quickly reassured everyone that this is not retroactive. The four million Ukrainians already residing in Europe can breathe easy. This is strictly a gatekeeping measure for future arrivals.
It took Europe three years to realize that helping Ukraine defend itself and hosting military-age men who left illegally might be slightly contradictory policies.
