Dutch military bets on drones and AI as they brace for a Russian attack on NATO

Original version ·

The Dutch Ministry of Defence just looked at the map, looked at Ukraine, looked at their own warehouses, and went: "Yeah, we need a lot of drones. Like, right now."

The Dutch military is undergoing a massive reboot. Instead of just buying more traditional heavy metal, they are putting their money on drones, artificial intelligence, and cyber warfare.

Why the sudden rush? It turns out their defense planners are no longer treating a Russian attack on a NATO member as some hypothetical Tom Clancy plot. They are openly prepping for a limited Russian military operation against the alliance.

Essentially, they realized that hoping Article 5 will magically scare everyone away is no longer a plan. You actually need things that fly, swim, and think on their own to stop a neighbor who does not play by any rules.

Relying on cyber-defense and AI is great, until someone realizes the drones still need gunpowder to actually do the job.
