Zelenskyy replaces Syrskyi: Major General Drapatyi is new military chief

Original version ·

Another major shift at the top of the armed forces, but this time with a clear focus on drones, army corps reforms, and fixing mobilization.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi will take over as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Oleksandr Syrskyi gets a formal thank-you for the defense of Kyiv, the Kharkiv counteroffensive, and the Kursk operation.

The handoff is currently underway alongside Andriy Hnatov. The new priorities sound straightforward on paper: update the defense strategy, finish the army corps reform, deliver drones and weapons directly based on frontline requests, and figure out a mobilization system that makes sense.

Running an army during a high-tech war of attrition is brutal, but redesigning mobilization and defense strategy on the fly is a whole different challenge.
