Divorce in two clicks: Ukraine's Diia app is testing online breakups

Original version ·

Ukraine’s state-in-a-smartphone app Diia is launching an online divorce service. Yes, you can now officially end a marriage without ever having to look at your ex’s face in a depressing government registry office.

The digital ministry of Ukraine is apparently determined to make sure Ukrainians never have to talk to another human being again, even when ending their marriage. They are now beta-testing fully digital divorces directly inside the Diia app.

The rules of the game are simple: no minor kids, a verified tax ID, and a marriage certificate already registered in the app. If both partners agree, they just fill out a form, wait out the mandatory cool-off period, and then join a quick video call instead of visiting the dreaded registry office. The physical divorce certificate arrives nicely by mail.

A country where getting a divorce takes less effort than cancelling an Adobe subscription is definitely living in 2030.
