Canada is setting AI loose to track down Ukrainian kids abducted by Russia

Original version ·

While most people use AI to generate bizarre memes or write lazy emails, Ottawa has been quietly weaponizing machine learning for something that actually matters.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand revealed in Toronto that they have already spent two years testing AI, optics, and tracking tech to pinpoint where abducted Ukrainian kids, civilian hostages, and POWs are being hidden. Now they are doubling down and scaling the project up.

Kidnappers work hard to erase identities, issue fake birth certificates, and shuffle stolen children across thousands of miles of provincial orphanages. Digging through massive piles of facial data, open-source footage, and digital breadcrumbs across Russian networks turns out to be one of the few things machine learning is genuinely heroic at.

It turns out algorithms are far better at cutting through state-sponsored kidnapping than endless diplomatic statements ever were.
