Student Arsen Derkach traded campus life for Azov and died before turning 19

Original version ·

Instead of skipping boring morning lectures, an 18-year-old national security freshman took his syllabus way too literally and signed up for frontline combat.

Most college freshmen worry about passing winter exams or getting enough sleep. Arsen Derkach passed his exams at the Ostroh Academy, decided studying theory wasn't enough, and signed an army contract the moment he became an adult.

He joined the Azov brigade as a gunner-operator. For his callsign, he picked Tychus, straight out of StarCraft. The tragic difference was having zero extra lives when heading into Shcherbynivka in the Donetsk region.

His farewell in his hometown happened on July 11 — the exact day he was supposed to blow out nineteen candles on a birthday cake.

Generations of kids get to argue about campus drama only because teenagers like this decide textbooks can wait.
