Diplomatic return: Ambassador Vasyl Bodnar sends back Polish state medal

Original version ·

Usually, when someone gets a state award, they frame it or put it on a shelf. But Ukraine's ambassador to Poland just pulled a legendary "return to sender" move with his Knight's Cross.

Our ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, decided that some gifts are better off returned. He announced he is handing back the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit, a highly prestigious Polish state award he received earlier.

Returning a state medal is basically the diplomatic equivalent of throwing a ring back at an ex. There was no long, boring explanation, just a dry statement that he was "forced" to take this step. No drama, no public tears, just pure, cold boundary-setting.

State diplomacy has officially entered its return-to-sender era.
